Apthorpe Gallery, Arts Depot, North London 29th March to 18th April 2012

The exhibition presents a photographic journey of the Israeli photographer Merav Stark who documented contemporary Israel along the Israel’s Trail, a scenic route across the country – from its northern border with Lebanon to its southernmost tip on the Red Sea and the border with Egypt. The trail has become a popular route and thousands of people are hiking in the trail every year, many campaigning and trying to raise public awareness on various issues. During 75 trekking days and through a personal lens of the hiking experience, Merav Stark took thousand of magnificent photos which capture different aspects of Israeli life: environment, society and culture. The unique pictures of Israel cover different parts of the country with their different geographic characteristic and exhibit contemporary life in Israel. The images create a fascinating multifaceted narrative of Israel: social aspects cross different cities and villages populated by Jews, Christians and Muslims; ‘Angels’ of the trail - people that open their hearts and welcome the hikers in their homes; nature and environment – from high mountain, through valleys and to the sea; climate - from the rainy mountainous in the north to the southern desert desert and through the annual seasons from autumn to summer. Additional activities planned (time to TBC): Saturday 31.3.2012 Opening night. Tuesday 3.4.2012 screening of the "The Chosen Trail” by film director Uri Goldstein followed by a Gallery talk. Thursday 5.4.2012 workshop for photographers - light in London vis-à-vis hard light in Israel Wednesday 11.4.2012 Photography workshop for the wider public - light in London vis-à-vis hard light in Israel. Tuesday 17.4.2012 an educational evening with the Society for Protection of the Nature in Israel SPNI (sponsors of the exhibition). Apthorpe Gallery Merav Stark Resume
